?? Go Hiking

Double Butte Loop and Hole-in-the-Rock Trail in Papago Park
625 N Galvin Pkwy, Phoenix, AZ 85008

What better way to ogle the uncanny red sandstone formations of Papago Park than hiking around (and inside) them? The smaller two of these beautiful buttes can be explored on an easy dirt loop that starts in the West Park parking lot, accessible from Galvin Parkway. Then, drive across the street to the park’s east side for a quick climb up rocky stairs to peek out from the cave-like Hole-in-the-Rock, a popular landmark (and prehistoric solstice-tracking tool) with views of an oasis and distant city skyline.

Distance: 2.3 mile loop and 825 ft out and back (Hole-in-the-Rock)

Blevies Trail in Usery Mountain Regional Park
3939 N. Usery Pass Rd. Mesa, AZ 85207

For an easygoing introduction to quintessential Sonoran Desert scenery, this trail is your pick. The flat, meandering path lets you take your eyes off your footing to scope out towering saguaros, tangled ocotillos, bristling bushes of cholla and the banded ridgeline of nearby Pass Mountain.

Distance: 3 mile loop

Judith Tunnell Accessible Trails in South Mountain Park/Preserve
10409 S. Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85042

This paved trail includes two half-mile loops that start near the South Mountain Environmental Education Center’s disabled accessible parking spots. While both feature water fountains, shade ramadas and benches for resting, the Interpretive Loop offers educational signage on the surrounding desert life, while the Challenge Loop is a slightly steeper grade.

Distance: .5 mile loops

Pinnacle Peak Trail in Pinnacle Peak Park
26802 N. 102nd Way Scottsdale, AZ 85262

This moderate hike has a very smooth tread with a number of ups and downs over the course of the 1.75-mile trail. Catch great views of saguaros, cholla cactus, creosote plants and wildlife such as bobcats, Gila monsters and western diamondback rattlesnakes.

Distance: 1.8 miles out and back

? Fall Foliage Scenic Driving

Grand Canyon North Rim Parkway
The serene North Rim of the Grand Canyon is arguably more breathtaking than its tour bus-crammed southern counterpart, especially when it’s splashed with shimmering gold aspen.

Direction: From Payson, drive east on SR 260 for about 29 miles, then turn north onto FR 300 once you reach the top of the rim.

Hart Prairie Road
The San Francisco Peaks that rule over Flagstaff become crowned with golden aspen, and this route is one of the best ways to get a two-to three-hour audience with its alpine majesty.

Direction: From downtown Flagstaff, take U.S. 180 northwest for about 10 miles to Forest Road 151 (near mile marker 226). Hart Prairie Road winds through colorful timber for 10 miles then reconnects to U.S.180.

Payson and Mogollon Rim
The scenery is dominated by the nearby Mogollon Rim—a dramatic escarpment on the edge of the Colorado Plateau that looms 2,000 feet over the towns below. On top of the precipice is cool high country, swathed in forest foliage.

Direction: From Payson, take Highway 260 to the beginning of Forest Road 300 and skirt the edge of the Rim heading east

Oak Creek Canyon
The maples along this classic cruise between Flagstaff and Sedona could deliver – for a few shimmering weeks in autumn it puts all competition to shame with vibrant hues of red, gold and yellow.

Direction: About 9.5 miles north of Sedona on SR 89A
